Rio de Janeiro State League (Campeonato Fluminense) 1953

In 1953, DEP affiliated a large numbers of newly professional clubs,
and planned a state championship with too many participants. The clubs of
Niterói and Campos were against this and decided not to dispute the State
Championship, but only their city leagues, that were now professional.

The State Championship of 1953, then, was disputed only with teams of the
Vale do Paraíba region, and Barra Mansa Futebol Clube conquered the title,
while Royal Sport Club finished second.

However, after the pression of clubs from Niterói and Campos, FFD decided
that the 1953 State Championship was no more valid as a state honour, but
only as a Vale do Paraíba Championship. The State Championship of 1953 was
reorganized, now only with the 1953 professional champions of Niterói, Campos
and Vale do Paraíba. This new championship was disputed in 1954, but
was valid for the 1953 season. The 1952 State Championship was not altered.

But in 1962 FFD turned back on this decision, and all championships of DEP
were again recognized as state championships. The championship disputed between
the champions of DEP and the Niterói and Campos city leagues became an extra
state tournament, called State Superchampionship.
