Originally a championship with 28 teams was to be organized by the CBF;
however, Botafogo and Coritiba, who had been left out, went to a sports
court and there won the right to participate. This of course led to many
other teams trying to enter the tournament. Moreover, the CBF at the time
was broke and could not finance a Brazilian championship. This led to
the breakaway of the Clube dos Treze, and two tournaments, the Copa
União or Green Module and the Yellow Module organized by CBF.
CBF also organized the dispute of the Blue and White Modules consisting of
the remaining teams. Despite the press treatment of the Yellow Module as a
2nd division, and of the Blue and White Modules as a 3rd division, there was
no official characterization of the four modules as divisions.
I COPA UNIÃO/GREEN MODULE (Taça João Havelange)
NB: this championship was organized by the "Clube dos Treze" (Club of Thirteen),
independently of the Brazilian Federation (CBF). The thirteen "big" clubs
invited three others (Coritiba, Goiás and Santa Cruz-PE) and played for
the Copa União. Meanwhile the CBF organized a tournament for 16 of the
clubs left out (including 1986 runners-up Guarani of Campinas), called the
Yellow Module, see below, and insisted on semifinals between the top-2 of the
Copa União (Flamengo and Internacional-RS) and those of the Yellow Module
(Sport Recife and Guarani). Flamengo and Internacional did not enter, and CBF
inscribed Sport Recife and Guarani for the Copa Libertadores, but in 1988 the
composition of the championship (called II Copa União) was based on that
of the 16 teams of the Copa União 1987 (the top-7 of the Yellow Module
and América-RJ were added).

[1] Teams which would play in First Level according to the original rule of
1986 Brazilian Championship.
According to [JB] (09/09/87, 2nd edition), [OG] (09/09/87), [JT] (09/09/87),
[DP] (10/09/87) and [OESP] (13/09/87)
sources, the original rule of 1987 Brazilian Championship stated that:
- The 12 best placed teams would be qualified to 1988 First Level
- The 13th and 14th placed teams would play a qualifying tournament (for two
berths in 1988 First Level) against the 7th and 8th of Yellow Module
- The 15th and 16th placed teams would play the 1988 Second Level
These rules, however, were not applied, since the composition of 1988 First
and Second Levels were defined under other criteria.

[1] Teams which would play in First Level according to the original rule of
1986 Brazilian Championship.
According to [JB] (09/09/87, 2nd edition), [OG] (09/09/87), [DP] (10/09/87)
and [OESP] (13/09/87)
sources, the original rule of 1987 Brazilian Championship stated that:
- The 6 best placed teams would be qualified to 1988 First Level
- The 7th and 8th placed teams would play a qualifying tournament (for two
berths in 1988 First Level) against the 13th and 14th of Green Module
- The 9th to 16th placed teams would play the 1988 Second Level
These rules, however, were not applied, since the composition of 1988 First
and Second Levels were defined under other criteria.
Sport, Guarani, Bangu, Atlético-PR, Criciúma, Vitória and Portuguesa were
eventually invited to join the 16 clubs from Green Module in the 1988 First
Level. Although América-RJ did not dispute the Yellow Module, they were also
invited to the 1988 1st level.
Final Phase
NB: Sport Recife and Guarani entered the playoff with the Green Module
(Copa União) top-2 ordered by CBF, but Flamengo and International-RS
did not enter. Sport Recife and Guarani then played two games.

According to [JB] (09/09/87, 2nd edition), [DP] (10/09/87) and [OESP] (13/09/87)
sources, the original rule of 1987 Brazilian Championship stated that the 12 best
teams of White and Blue Modules would be qualified to 1988 Second Level, but it
is unclear if these teams were 6 from each module or an overall classification
or any other criteria would be adopted.
These rules, however, were not applied, since the composition of 1988 First
and Second Levels were defined under other criteria.
