Brazil Cup History

Brazil first organized a national cup tournament from 1959 to 1968, called Taa Brasil. The tournament was created as a result of the creation of the Copa Libertadores de Amrica; as Brazil did not have a national championship at the time, the winners of the Taa Brasil entered the Copa Libertadores de Amrica, for which every country used to have one entry.

The tournament was discontinued after the introduction of a national championship (in 1971, following the Taa de Prata (or Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa) from 1967 to 1970).

A new cup tournament, called Copa do Brasil, was introduced in 1989, in order to appease the smaller states, whose clubs had been excluded from the first level since the creation of the Copa Unio in 1987.

The winners of the Copa do Brasil also enter the Copa Libertadores de Amrica, for which each country now has two entries (Brazil four starting from the 2000 edition). From 1991 to 1995, the runner-ups of Copa do Brasil entered the Copa Conmebol.

From 1989 to 1994, 32 teams participated in the Copa do Brasil, the state champions and the runners-up from the states with the highest average attendance for the local championship. (Some states entered their local cup winners or teams selected according to other criteria.) In 1995, four third-placed teams were also allowed to enter. In 1996, along with the 32 traditional entries, the 8 teams with the highest average attendance in the national championship were invited. From 1997 to 2003, teams have been invited by CBF (in addition to the 32 traditional entries) according to unpublished criteria. Finally, since 2004 CBF stated that the 64 participants of Copa do Brasil are 10 teams selected from the CBF ranking and 54 teams classified from state competitions.

Obs.: In 22/Dec/2010 CBF, awarded to Taa Brasil (1959-1968) and Roberto Gomes Pedrosa (1967-1970) tournaments the status of Brazilian Championships.
